This started as a project to index two books I own, which were difficult to use as references due to lack of same. The books are "Roses for an Empress" and "The Complete Book of 169 Redouté Roses" by F. L. Anderson. The roses have different names in the two books, and differ from the current names for those roses still existing. I decided to add to my index the current species and common names where available, and the volume and page number of the original print in Les Roses when I could find them. I have since bought "P.-J. Redouté Roses" by Miller Graphics,1978, and "Redouté's Roses" by Wellfleet Press, 1990. The 1978 book was copied from the 1835 edition, and includes three roses not in the other two books, and some of the others were altered slightly by other artists. Pages in this book are not numbered, so I added numbers starting with the title page. My primary references for this project were "The Graham Stuart Thomas Rose Book", Suzanne Verrier's "Rosa Gallica" and Ellen Willmott's "The Genus Rosa" in that order. I also used Phillips and Rix, Gerd Krussman's "Complete Book of the Rose", David Austin, Trevor Griffiths, Modern Roses 3, the Combined Rose List 1994, the guide to the San Jose Heritage Rose Garden. I checked Beales for any still missing species, but he didn't have them either.

Some information was found which could not be put in the index. One of the gallica roses illustrated is called "Aimable Rouge" aka "La Triomphe". It is described as purple pink, with deep shading and veining, a tight cluster of stamens, double and well formed. I cannot find an unnamed rose that fits this description.

One of the great landmarks among the masterpieces of flower books was definitely set by Pierre-Joseph Redouté (1759 St. Hubert - 1840 Paris). His fame began to rise when Emperess Josephine Bonaparte hired him in 1798, convinced that only he could fulfill her desire to portrait her beloved flower gardens in the chateau of Malmaison. A series of flower books, produced in the highest of quality resulted from Redouté's engagement to this task: "Jardin de Malmaison", "Description des Plantes rares cultivées ŕ Malmaison et ŕ Navarre", 8 explicity delicate volumes of "Les Liliacées" and, his most famous "Les Roses". Redouté used the technique of stipple engraving aquatint and printed, most of all, in the finest of color! These techniques carried him to unprecidented fame regarding the printing of flower books which has even increased in our time and age, as more people than ever before around the world have access to and, thus, knowledge of the fine art the name of Redouté represents. The editions of books of his time have by no means been large enough to accomodate comfortably the desire of the many who would like to own at least one of these fine samples of flower prints. Occasionally, with the fortune of the determined, a dealer has the luck to find and buy some of Redouté's work.

The following prints stem from Redouté's octavo editions between 1828 and 1837. Plate size: ca. 24 x 15.5 cm ( 9.4 x 6.1 ")

Plates are in Very Good condition unless otherwise noted. Slight toning is normal. Some right margins are narrow.

Einer der berühmtesten Blumenzeichner war Pierre-Joseph Redouté. Er machte mit seinen Zeichnungen die Rosen im Garten Malmaison unsterblich. In den Jahren 1817-1824 (also nach ihrem Tod) erschien das berühmte Werk, von dem es heißt, er habe darin die Rosen von Malmaison gemalt "Les Roses". Sie waren entstanden im Garten von Malmaison und in den Gärtnereien der genannten französischen Rosenfirmen, die Josephine belieferten.

Pierre-Joseph Redouté was a French artist of the late 18th and early 19th century. The images here were taken from his famous book of prints, Les Roses. Redouté mastered the unusual technique of stipple engraving - the use of tiny dots, rather than lines. This made possible the subtle variations in coloring for which his work is known. Josephine, erste Ehefrau Napoleons und spätere Kaiserin Frankreichs, ließ um 1800 den Garten ihres Schlosses Malmaison bei Paris von bedeutenden Gartenarchitekten zu einer der schönsten Anlagen dieser Art in Europa umgestalten. Von den dort angepflanzten Raritäten wurden für die Kaiserin vom berühmten Blumenmaler Pierre-Joseph Redouté Porträts angefertigt und danach in Kupfer gestochen. Unser Buch enthält neben einer mit zeitgenössischen Aquarellen illustrierten Einführung alle 120 Blumentafeln des Originalbandes aus dem Botanischen Museum Berlin sowie einen kurzen Fotoessay über Schloss und Park heute.

Über den Autor
Prof. Dr. H. Walter Lack ist Direktor am Botanischen Garten und Botanischen Museum Berlin-Dahlem und Professor an der Freien Universität Berlin. Er verfasste mehrere Bücher zur Geschichte der Botanik. Dr. Marina Heilmeyer ist Kunsthistorikerin und vor allem für das Botanische Museum in Berlin tätig.

Synopsis
Pierre-Joseph Redouté is perhaps the most popular botanical painter of all, thanks largely to the 170 plates collected in the three volumes of Les Roses (1817-24). Redouté (1759-1840) came from a family of many generations of painters, and studied under the botanist Charles-Louis L'Heritier de Brutelle, who persuaded him that the best botanical illustrations were the result of an expert knowledge of living things. For the last fifty years of his life Redouté served as drawing master to the queens and princesses of France, from Marie-Antoinette to Marie-Amelie. His drawings adorned a series of lavishly illustrated books by leading French botanists which covered a wide range of subjects from garden plants to forest trees and succulents. Roses, however, are the most familiar subject of his works, owing to the outstanding quality of his artistry and the devotion of so many gardeners to this group of shrubs. Among these enthusiasts was the Empress Josephine, whose garden at Malmaison contained over 200 varieties of roses, many of which Redouté painted for his book. Still grown today is a rose with fragrant, pinkish-white flowers called "Souvenir de la Malmaison," which commemorates both Josephine's garden and the West Indian island of Martinique where she was born. Not all the roses depicted in Les Roses came from Malmaison, however; Redouté and the author of the descriptive text, Claude-Antoine Thory, selected varieties from the national gardens at Paris, Sevres, and Versailles and from the gardens of nurserymen and knowledgeable amateurs. Redouté created the most memorable survey of the rose through his skill in representing the its infinite variety and his equal talent for capturing the subtleties of shape and color in both flowers and leaves - and often an impression of the way the whole bush grows as well. Les Roses remains a cornerstone in the study of the historical development of this favorite flower, as well as the unequaled peak of its artistic depiction. No flower painter has so linked his name and immortality with a single genus as has Redouté with the rose. This Octavo Edition reproduces the first of only five special copies issued in large folio format with the plates in a double sequence: uncolored (on tan paper) and colored (on white paper), from The Lessing J. Rosenwald Collection at the Library of Congress.

Pierre-Joseph Redouté wurde am 10.Juli 1759 in St. Hubert in der Nähe von Lüttich in den Ardennen geboren (- 19.06.1840, Paris). Nach Wanderjahren in Holland, Belgien, Luxemburg, Paris, London und wieder in Paris erhielt er von Napoleons erster Gattin Josephine den Auftrag ihre 250 in Malmaison zusammengetragenen Rosen zu portraitieren. Seine botanisch getreuen Lithographien der "Rosen" erschienen 1817-1824.
